Meet Dr. Maeve Ferriter
Dr. Maeve Mahon-Ferriter is enrolled in the specialist registration of the Medical Council
with number 22745 since 1998. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry
and Neurology since 1981.
Dr. Maeve Mahon-Ferriter gained her MB. BCh. BAO degree from University College Galway
in 1974 and completed her internship and residency training in New York from 1974 to 1978.
Internship in medicine and surgery was completed at Columbia University’s Harlem Hospital
Centre in 1974 and 1975. Residency in psychiatry was at Columbia Presbyterian Medical
Centre and the New York State Psychiatric Institute from 1975 to 1978. She has advanced training in psychotherapy.
Maintaining a part time continuous private practice in the adult general practice of psychiatry
in Manhattan from 1978 to 2008, she also served as assistant professor of psychiatry at
New York University School of Medicine at Bellevue Hospital, was clinical professor of psychiatry at New York Medical College and worked at St Luke’s Hospital before becoming a consultant at Health Insurance Plan of greater New York which later
became Emblem Health. She now has forty-three years of experience as a consultant psychiatrist.
From 2005 to 2013, while establishing her private practice of psychiatry in her office in Ballinacourty, Annascaul, County Kerry, she worked as a temporary locum consultant psychiatrist for the HSE at University Hospital Kerry in Tralee.
Attempting to retire from private practice in 2018 proved challenging, with the discovery that no private consultant psychiatrists currently have open appointments to see new patients. Dr. Ferriter now sees no new patients and continues the process of referring existing patients back to GP care and the public service when possible. She continues to be an active member of the Irish College of Psychiatry and still maintains Medical Council registration.
In 2019, she worked at University Hospital Limerick, Department of Psychiatry and Newcastle West, Count Limerick Community Psychiatry Clinic. In March 2020, she volunteered as part of Covid Doctors On Call for Ireland. Since December 2020, she has provided locum psychiatric care as needed at University Hospital Kerry, Community Mental Health Services, in Tralee, Killarney and Listowel, County Kerry. No longer living in New York City, her visits there have resumed as Covid guidelines permit.
